Nearly 80% of people have back pain, including lower back pain, at some point or another during their life. Since this is a problem which affects nearly everyone, it is important to know what the causes of lower back pain are. It’s important to understand how you can keep severe lower back pain at bay by controlling these factors.

Causes of Lower Back Pain

As we age, we lose a lot of our body’s natural muscle tone and elasticity. As well, bone strength generally decreases as we get older. Loss of fluid results in the discs in your spine becoming less flexible. This results in less protection for the vertebrae. Just the fact of getting older can play a part in experiencing lower back pain.

If the ligaments or muscles in your back experience a sprain, spasm, or strain, the spinal discs can burst or bulge. This in turn places pressure on the nerves in your spinal cord. Our back lets us know about this with the neural signals we know as pain. So what causes your sprains, strains and spasms? Frequently, this type of injury is caused by attempting to lift heavy objects or overstretching the muscles.

Lower back pain can also be caused by diseases like osteoporosis and arthritis. There are also causes including viral infections, joint or disc irritation and spinal abnormalities.

Lifestyle factors can also be contributors to lower back pain. This includes smoking, being overweight, pregnancy, stress, bad posture and being in poor shape. Hip pain and lower back pain sometimes come as a distressing package deal. Another cause of lower back pain can be scar tissue from old injuries – this can also lead to further, more critical injuries.

When to Worry About Lower Back Pain

You should take your lower back pain seriously if it comes along with other symptoms. These might include a fever, a painful cough, loss of bladder or bowel control and muscular weakness, especially in the legs. If your lower back pain is accompanied by these symptoms, contact your physician immediately. They may indicate a pinched nerve or other underlying problem. If you suffer from diabetes, your back pain might be related to neuropathy.

Avoiding Lower Back Pain

By paying attention to proper back pain management techniques, most lower back pain can be avoided. Recurring lower back pain can usually be traced to poor posture. You can work on correcting this. Stand straight, remember to lift with your legs rather than with your back, and do exercises to build lower back strength. Make sure to follow proper ergonomic procedures during your workday. This can go a long way towards preventing lower back pain.

If you were not aware of it, Crohns Disease is an incurable disease believed to develop from an overactive autoimmune response by the body. Put simply, this means that the body’s defenses are basically turning on the body and attacking it. The battle with Crohn’s is fought in the digestive tract, particularly within the colon. Through research and the experience of Crohns sufferers, it has been proven that diet plays an important role in the emergence and subsequent control of the disease.

People living with Crohns Disease often have to modify their diets. For many, this can be a real pain in the neck. Foods that you once regularly enjoyed might be now impossible to eat. Having Crohns Disease does not mean you have to stop enjoying food, however, you may have to choose carefully what you eat.

The way the body deals with Crohn’s is different for every person. Some may be able to tolerate foods that others cannot. Basically, it takes a trial and error approach. One of the suggestions Crohns experts have expressed for those with the disease is to keep a food diary. Keep track of what food you eat on a daily basis and the subsequent reactions of your digestive tract. That way if you notice your Crohn’s symptoms acting up you can pinpoint the food that may have caused it. In the future, you can avoid that food and by process of elimination, find out which foods you can tolerate and the others that you cannot.

There is also a general list of foods to eat and foods to avoid. As stated earlier, this is not a definitive guideline, but the suggestions are appropriate to the majority of people suffering with Crohns.

If you have Crohns Disease, planning a diet is very important. It is best to eat a balanced diet from the four major food groups. Some of the foods that are generally tolerable for Crohns sufferers include fresh fruits and vegetables, particularly those high in fiber.

Furthermore, from eating salmon, tuna and other types of fish, the body can get valuable omega-3 fatty acids which can also help. Instead of eating massive meals a few times a day, try to eat smaller meals in order to give your digestive tract the leeway to operate without putting it under a lot of pressure. Eat lots of protein, complex carbohydrates, and potassium-rich foods to keep your system in balance. It is also important that you drink lots of water to keep your body hydrated.

Crohns disease, an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), causes ulcers to form in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract anywhere from the mouth to the anus. Symptoms include stomach cramps and pain that comes and goes, diarrhea, and blood in your stool. Other symptoms include losing weight, feeling sick to your stomach, having joint pain and feeling tired. Some people who have Crohn’s disease have severe symptoms, while others have less severe symptoms. Some people who have the disease have long periods without symptoms, even without getting treatment. Others with more severe disease will need long-term treatment or even surgery.

Almost 500,000 people in the United States have Crohn’s disease. Anyone can get Crohn’s disease, but it’s more common in women, whites and Jewish people. It is not known what causes Crohn’s disease. It seems to run in families, but there is no known pattern of inheritance.

Source: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/crohns/

According to a press release from UCB on April 22, 2008, a new pegylated anti-TNFα, will be made available in the United States under the name Cimzia® in the next few days. This will be a new, promising option for patients suffering from moderate to severe Crohn’s Disease.

Crohns Disease (CD) is a gastrointestinal disorder which is indicated by chronic inflammation of the wall of the digestive tract, usually in the ileum or large intestines. It usually affects young people, between the ages of 15 and 35. Approximately half a million people have the disease in Europe and the United States each. The disease involves constant cycles of flare-ups and remission throughout the life of the patient, and without proper treatment, must be addressed surgically. It is considered an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), similar to ulcerative colitis.

Foods that should be usually avoided include those high in fat content, processed food, fast foods, many diary products, sugary products, alcohol and caffeine. Obviously, the healthier the diet your follow, the better it will be for your body to cope with Crohns Disease.

Crohns is a fickle disease. It is important that you take an aggressive approach to finding ways to structure your diet so that it does not increase the chances of having flare ups.

Eating healthily, exercising, and working to remain stress-free are the best ways to go. Remember, you are what you eat – a statement that is even more important when dealing with Crohns Disease.

Do You Have High blood Pressure or Hypertension? One of the riskiest medical conditions that often goes unnecessarily undiagnosed is high blood pressure. Testing for high blood pressure and treating it if this disease is diagnosed is relatively simple, but many people just do not regularly schedule check-ups or otherwise test their blood pressure. Unfortunately, high blood pressure is the precursor to many serious diseases and medical conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. It can also lead to heart failure, heart attack, and stroke if not treated. By being sure to regulate your blood pressure closely, you can prevent something more serious from happening to your body.

High blood pressure causes an excess amount of stress on the artery walls. This causes the heart to have to pump harder, which promotes unhealthy tissue growth and a weakening of the heart muscle. When the heart muscle is weak, you can inadvertently cause it to stop if you overexert yourself. High blood pressure is also a symptom that points to over potential problems for your heart. For example, when high blood pressure is caused by plaque build-up in the artery walls, you should understand that the most major risk of this is heart attack. If too much plaque builds up at a specific section of the blood vessel, it could close off completely, causing heart attack. Similarly, even if it does not close completely, a piece of the plaque could break off from the wall, travel down the blood vessel, and get lodges in a smaller vessel or in the heart itself, also causing a heart attack.

Beyond the heart, a similar thing can happen to the brain. If a piece of plaque cuts off a blood vessel in the brain, you suffer from a stroke. While you can eventually regain heart-health again after a mild heart attack, the effects of a stroke can be long lasting or permanent, depending on where in your brain the effected blood vessel is located. Because blood is cut off from your brain, oxygen cannot travel to this area, and so pieces of the brain die. Some cannot be rebuilt, and some, if they die, result in death.

If that’s not scary enough, high blood pressure can cause or be an indicator of many other small health problems that can add up to a very sickly body. For example, high blood pressure is often an indicator of too much glucose in the blood stream, causing or caused by diabetes. Even if you do not have diabetes, you are still at risk for chronic renal (kidney) failure if you have high blood pressure.

It is unfortunate that so many people needlessly suffer from these diseases. High blood pressure is easy to diagnose at your doctor’s office, but even if you do not wish to make an appointment to have your blood pressure checked, you can still regulate yourself. Many home testing kits are available on the market to do just this, and if you follow the directions carefully, they can be quite accurate. There is really no excuse for going undiagnosed, so take care of your body by checking your blood pressure today.

Candidiasis is the common name for a condition that results in the overproduction of a form of yeast normally found in the body at low levels. Candida is not considered anything to worry about; however, recent research has put a spotlight on this form of yeast that is causing the medical profession to reconsider its totally benign assessment of candida. It is inside all of us – in the digestive tract, mouth, and throat. In women, it is also found in the vagina. The most common species of candida is called candida albicans.

When the human body is weakened it is vulnerable to attack. Consider that at all times various bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens are waging an unseen war against the body. Likewise, the immune system is always on guard, waiting for the attack. In response to outside invasion, the body produces various weapons to fight hostile aggression. Sometimes, if the body is weakened through a host of conditions and situations, the immune system cannot do its job properly.

One common condition caused by candida is thrush. Thrush is a buildup of candida that can effect men and women alike. As many as seventy-five percent of women will experience at least one vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime – caused by an overgrowth of candida.

These common conditions are annoying, but they do not represent the symptoms of chronic Candidiasis. Chronic overproduction of candida can lead to a wide range of physical and mental symptoms. It can manifest as abdominal pain, fatigue, skin infections, and even cognitive difficulties. There appears to be such an extent of problems related to candida overgrowth that candida is often dismissed as a cause.

In chronic Candidiasis, the rapidly multiplying candida changes form. It morphs into its dangerous fungal state and spreads. The fungal form of candida produces rhizoids – hook-shaped barbed appendages that cut into tissue and membranes, causing pain and other harmful symptoms. If not treated, a condition called Leaky Gut Syndrome can develop in the intestinal tract. Leaky Gut Syndrome allows toxins to leave the digestive tract and feed right into the bloodstream. It is also interesting to note that once someone begins treatment to kill the excess candida growth, the initial reaction to treatment will often result with the patient actually feeling worse! This is due to the fact that the fungal form of candida does not want to die and it fights like heck to survive!

In addition, there are indications that candidiasis can affect people who do not have compromised immune systems. New research has indicated that people who have healthy immune systems can also fall victim to the rhizoid-reach of candida. This is important because it presents a way for science to pinpoint root causes instead of simply treating symptoms.

Candida is most likely responsible for more problems than it is given credit for. Before you start treatment for candida, you should try and read up about the subject and fully understand what is involved. As with anything else, knowledge is power.

Your doctor may prescribe both daily medication and medication to take in case of an acute asthma episode, but the task of minimizing risk of asthma attack and taking care of yourself on a daily basis is largely up to you and your family. Learning some key asthma self help tricks can help you keep your asthma under control so that it doesn’t interfere with your daily life.

Because asthma can be caused, triggered or worsened by so many things, there are many things that you can do to lessen the frequency and severity of the symptoms. Your doctor will offer important suggestions in addition to medication to help you manage your asthma. Think of those suggestions as a personalized asthma self help plan. A major part of asthma self help involves avoiding asthma triggers. Some ways that you can help yourself if you or someone in your family has asthma include:

1. The first and most important step in asthma self help is to follow your doctor’s orders. Don’t stop taking daily medication just because you feel better. If he’s prescribed daily peak flow measurements, be sure to follow instructions carefully and measure daily to monitor your condition.

2. If you smoke, quit. Whether the asthma sufferer is you or a child in your family, cigarette smoke is one of the most common asthma triggers known.

3. Keep the house dust-free – or as close to dust-free as possible. Dust is another common asthma trigger. Use a cylinder vacuum instead of an upright – preferably one that encloses the vacuum cleaner bag inside a solid canister to minimize pumping dust back into the air.

4. If you can, remove carpets and heavy draperies. They’re dust-catchers that easily breed dust mites. If you can’t remove them, vacuum them frequently using a canister vacuum cleaner.

5. Avoid using down feather pillows and comforters, and use a plastic cover on your mattress. Mattresses and pillows can harbor dust mites. The same goes for stuffed animals and other ‘soft’ decorations.

6. Cover your mouth and nose with a scarf in cold weather. Cold air is another common asthma trigger.

7. If your asthma is triggered by allergens, monitor the outside air quality daily. Avoid open fields and woodsy areas during peak pollen seasons, and take extra care when air quality is in danger ranges.

8. Mold is another common allergen that triggers asthma. Keeping mold down is another important part of asthma self help care. Dry wet laundry immediately, and wash and disinfect bathrooms and showers regularly. Remove houseplants, as mold grows in their soil.

9. Pet dander can also trigger asthma symptoms. If you can’t part with a pet because of emotional ties, at least keep it out of the bedroom to minimize your exposure to dander.

10. Be aware of any food or ingested allergies, and avoid foods, medications and drinks that cause allergic reactions.
