They’re some of the oldest toys in the business. If you have a daughter, you’ve probably seen them on a birthday wish list or Christmas list. Barbie is simply one of those great dolls that stand the test of time. If you were born in the 70’s or the 90’s; you know that Barbie and Barbie lovers are still going strong.
From Barbie dolls to Barbie play sets and cars, young girls can never seem to get enough of the tall, thin blond. Although they’re rather simple compared to a lot of the newer toys these days, Barbie dolls remain all the rage. Although, some in the fashion industry suggest that Barbie has “cankles”, but I don’t consider perfection to be all that important.
When I had a daughter, a new Barbie was inevitable. Sure enough, by the time she could recognize the rubber dolls, she had a list of them in mind. However, I didn’t quite realize the extent of the Barbie collection. These classic little toys go on for miles. There’s endless versions of Barbie, herself. From Christmas Barbies to diving Barbies to Cinderella Barbies, the list continues. In addition, there are also the male versions, called Ken, of course, and we can’t forget about little sister, Kelly. Continue Reading »
When most people think of a New Years Eve party, they picture a party with mostly adults and do not usually think of children when considering these types of parties. However, each year many New Years Eve parties either include kids or are planned specifically for kids. Whether you are planning to throw a New Years Eve party for your children or your friends or are simply planning to allow your adult guests to bring their children to the party, there are some considerations which must be taken when planning a New Years Eve party.
One of the most obvious considerations is alcohol consumption. Obviously it is inappropriate to allow minors to consume alcohol so the party host should plan on other beverages for the children at the party. They might want to consider serving mocktails which are non alcoholic versions of cocktails. These mocktails are a lot of fun and will help to prevent the children from being envious of the drinks the adults are enjoying because they will have their own fun and colorful drinks. When creating mocktails for children it is important to focus on the presentation. Creating colorful drinks and serving them in festive glasses is a good idea. The host should also give some consideration for alcohol consumption for adults and might consider placing a drink limitation to prevent the adult guests from becoming inebriated during the party.
Food should also be carefully considered when planning a New Years Eve party which will include children. This is important because children can be rather picky about their food. Fortunately appetizers are perfect for New Years Eve celebrations and most kids enjoy appetizers. Foods such as mini pizzas, hot dogs and hamburgers are particularly popular with kids. Similarly, simple foods such as cut up pieces of fruit or cheese or also popular with kids. The host may wish to plan on having an assortment of kid friendly appetizers as well as more sophisticated appetizers for the adults. One example of a cute food idea is to have sushi for the adults and to make an appetizer resembling sushi for the kids. This can be done by cutting the crusts of pieces of white bread, spreading peanut butter on the bread and layering pieces of strawberry on the peanut butter. The bread can then be rolled up and cut to resemble pieces of sushi. The kids will enjoy having an appetizer that looks like what the adults are eating but will also enjoy the taste of their own unique snack. Continue Reading »

Colic is something that you think of in regards to children under the age of one. This is often a spell of crying that happens for more than a few minutes at least a few times a day. You would not have a baby suffering from colic if they cry for five minutes, but colic may be what is going on when they cry for hours on end and you can not seem to find anything wrong nor can you calm them. While colic use to be a blanket term for the unknown, many babies suffering from colic actually have baby acid reflux. Now that many know this is the problem, it is easier to end the suffering for both baby and parents. Acid reflux can happen with any baby whether they are breastfed or bottle fed with formula. However, babies who are breastfed are less likely to have colic that is related to acid reflux.
My son suffered from acid reflux as a baby and it caused asthma-like symptoms along with excessive mucus buildup in his lungs. This progressed for many months until his pediatrician ran out of ideas and diagnosed him with Cystic Fibrosis; needless to say, that was a complete shock. Several days later, I took him to see a pulminary specialist who looked him over, ran a simple test and determined that his problem was only acid refux, not systic fibrosis. Apparently, he was breathing in tiny amounts of stomach acid into his lungs, because the muscle that is supposed to keep the acid in his stomach wasn’t working properly (that’s the case with most acid reflux sufferers). When stomach acid hits the lining of the lungs, the body produces mucus to protect the tissue. When babies have chronic acid reflux, this happens many times a day, and that’s not good. The specialist started my son on acid reflux medicine and, in a few weeks, his mucus cleared up. Hooray for modern medicine!
Some Things To Look Out For
If you are feeding your baby formula, or if they make faces or have problems near the end of or after a feeding, acid reflux in babies may be the problem. If you have given birth to a premature baby, you may very well have to worry about baby acid reflux even if you are giving them breast milk. You can not breast feed them right away in many cases, but they can have your breast milk through what is called a gavage or tube feeding. While they may not have any trouble digesting the breast milk, they may have baby acid reflux because of the length of their esophagus. This is too short, as they should have had time to grow before they had to digest food on their own. Acid reflux in premature babies is actually quite common no matter how they are fed. You have probably heard that breast milk is the best thing for your baby. This is the truth, but that does not mean that you are a bad person if you have to or choose to give your baby formula. Some people try to breastfeed and can not do it, and some just dry up no matter what they try to reverse the loss of milk. Some just do not want to do it for their own personal reasons. Some breastfeed but find that they need to supplement with formula because they can not produce enough. Whatever the case, there are some things to remember about feeding or supplementing with baby formula.
Some people fear that they are not making enough breast milk and they supplement with baby formula. There is nothing wrong with this if you do it the right way. You should remember that your body should make the milk you need, and there are ways you can tell if your baby is getting enough. If they are wetting diapers and gaining weight, you are doing okay. It is hard to tell as you can not see what is in your breast before and after you feed your baby. You can offer formula after breastfeeding to see if they take it. They will if they need it. Babies are good self-limiters and won’t drink it if they do not need it.
If your baby is born prematurely, the doctors and nurses may instruct you to add some powdered formula to your breast milk to up the calories in the milk. This is done because preemies are expending calories they would not have to expend in the womb and therefore need a few extra in each ounce of breast milk to thrive and gain weight. Do not do this unless you are so instructed by your doctor. Healthy, as full term babies do not need anything more than what is in the milk alone. You could hurt your baby if you fortify your breast milk without the consent of your doctor. <more here>
Premature babies that can not breast feed can take pumped milk through a bottle (or through a feeding tube if they are very small). They are not going to use the same baby formula that you would use if you had a full term baby. Even healthy preemies need special baby formula. Some hospitals will give them 22 ounce formula (normal breast milk and formula as 20 calories per ounce) or a special formula that is very easy to digest because preemies have a harder time with digestion. Again, do not use these without the consent of a doctor.
Baby formula is better than it has ever been. While the breastfeeding is the best in general, it is not always the best for every family, nor is it always possible. There is no reason to feel guilty if you choose to or have to give your baby formula as they are getting all that they need to be happy and healthy in the long run. Formula is made for the human baby, so don’t think you can substitute cow or other milk for feedings as this milk was made for a different baby, not the human one, and your baby will not thrive with it. Instead, ask your doctor to help you choose the right formula and know you are giving your baby all that you can to help them grow.
When it comes to decorating, we are all perfectionists about our Christmas tree. After all, it happens only once a year and the decorations are a treasure to behold. The finishing touch, for any Christmas tree, is the ornaments. Perhaps you have memories of a personalized ornament given to you as a child or maybe it’s the tradition of hanging them with your family – making sure that each is perfectly spaced from its neighbor for that added touch of beauty. The Christmas ornaments for Christmas trees, which we choose, should be a reflection of ourselves and our family.
There are all types of Christmas ornaments for Christmas trees. From glass to unbreakable, there is something for everyone. Glass ornaments are among the most expensive, in part, because they require such intricate detail and add a touch of elegance to any Christmas tree. Glass ornaments pick up the reflection of lights and beam them across the room with, perhaps, even a twinkle or two. These ornaments are often hand-painted, which adds to their uniqueness.
There are a variety of unbreakable ornaments, also available, in a multitude of colors. If you have a child who loves to be near the Christmas tree, glass ornaments may not be the best option. Or, if you have a pet that enjoys the mystique of the tree a little too much, you may opt for something unbreakable. This is why there are plastic ornaments, which are much safer for your inquiring family members whether they be small or furry.
If you have children, there are plenty of ways to make beautiful Christmas ornaments for Christmas trees at home.
Using gold ribbon, tie a bow and place it on the tree. Repeat these steps until your tree is filled with golden memories of your child’s imagination. You can also purchase plain white ceramic ornaments and, together with your children, paint them into beautiful Christmas ornaments for Christmas trees. Continue Reading »
