Off Road Motorcycles: Power And Dirt – What A Rush!

Dirt Bike RiderOff-roading is one of the popular pasttimes of rural American culture. Whether it’s karts, buggies or bikes, Americans love to get out doors on their off road vehicles, crank the throttle and feel the rush of adrenaline.

Of all the off road vehicles available, off road motorcycles are probably the most popular. Not as powerful or stable as street bikes, off road motorcycles offer greater agility and a lighter weight, which lends them to tricks and the type of adventure-riding that adrenaline junkies live for. You can barrel down muddy, wooded paths, or race your friends through fields. You can set up obstacle courses, or just go for a leisurely ride at a leisurely pace. Whatever you choose, you’re engaging in a uniquely American pasttime, one that is becoming more and more popular as the years and decades go by.

Off road motorcycles are also used in a sport called Motorcross, which has gained popularity over the past fifteen years thanks to “extreme” events like the X-Games and the like. In the X-Games, riders will attempt some spectacular tricks in front of usually sold-out, appreciative crowds. There are races, of course, but there is also the “freestyle” event in which a rider will race up a mound of dirt as much as fifty feet high, gun the throttle, and catch some amazing air. While soaring above the ground like some mechanical skylark, they then procede to do tricks to boggle the mind – full 360 degree tumbles, splits, side-swipes and the like. It’s something most of us would never consider – I mean, how do you practice jumping 50 feet or more in the air? What if something goes wrong? Do these guys have life insurance? Continue Reading »

The Gibson Les Paul Standard: A Truly Brilliant Guitar

Gibson Les Paul StandardThis brilliant guitar was a pioneering force in music back in its inception back in 1952. The Gibson Les Paul Standard was the first electric guitar made by this company that boasted a solid body. Once this instrument’s sounds hit the airwaves, music was changed forever.

Some argue that the Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar has had such a profound impact on the rock and roll scene that its sounds are still resonating in popular music of today. There is definitely a difference in the tones that emit out of the Les Paul than out of other instruments.

The tones that this instrument emits are thick and deep. The Gibson Les Paul Standard has a throaty voice that carries an emotive force that you can actually feel. There is nothing that compares to listening to a talented musician work with a Gibson Les Paul Standard. Other guitars just don’t match the sound.

Take your typical Fender Stratocaster. This guitar is wonderful and it offers great sounds for rock and roll music but there is a high, almost plucky undertone to the notes. That is, compared to the rich, deep tones that emit from the Gibson Les Paul Standard. There are certain songs that just don’t sound right when played on a Fender Stratocaster.

This makes me wonder where the difference lies. The Stratocaster is a solid body guitar, as is the Gibson Les Paul Standard but the tones are completely different. Anyone who has an ear can hear the disparity. I guess that you could even say that the Gibson is a little more masculine in tone. Continue Reading »

Acoustic Electric Guitars

For the longest time I had no idea what acoustic electric guitars were, and this is surprising to a lot of people I know because I am married to a guitar player. I know about electric guitars because there are ten different ones in my home, and I certainly have known about acoustic guitars because I have been around them my whole life. I owned own of my own before I ever met my husband. I had no idea that there was a combination out there, and this lead to a confusing moment in my life that I look back on now with laughter.

A few years ago my husband was in two bands, and on of those bands played blues and country music. He wasn’t big on the country component, but he loved the blues music. They had two acoustic electric guitars, and they had worked them into the shows. I had not seen them play in a while, so I had no idea what was going on. One of his band members called and asked me to remind my husband to bring both of the acoustic electric guitars up from the rehearsal space to the gig that night. Continue Reading »

Golfing With My Aching Back

I am guessing that all of us can relate to the title of this article. I am sure you have bent over for that 4 footer (can’t give you that 4 footer, sorry), and felt that lower back feel tired, sore, painful or tight. Regardless of what the word is, you feel it! I also am guessing that some of you have changed to belly putters for the reason that your back hurts when you putt! Even if you are one of those players that has switched to a belly putter because of back pain, that pain is an indicator of something else going on within the body.

I am sure we could use the excuse: I am older now and that is just what happens; or maybe we use the “cave man excuse”: humans just were meant to walk on two legs! Regardless of what excuse you use, there is a reason and solution to solve those lower back problems. Even if you don’t realize it, the lower back that you feel when putting is also affecting the other parts of your game (i.e. driving, long irons, chipping, pitching, etc.) This article has the goal of explaining why your back is sore when you putt and what we can do to help alleviate the problem.

Why Does My Lower Back Ache?

Well, let me say this to start. If you are in agreement with the “caveman excuse” you are in the ballpark as to why the lower back begins to ache on the 12th or 13th green. Standing upright, which is a specific posture (keep that word “posture” in mind throughout this article), places stress on the lower back. When I say stress, I am talking about the muscles of your lower back working to support your body in a specific position. The same holds true for when you putt. You get behind the ball, line the putt up, look at the line, maybe crouch down, take a few practice putts, and then away you go. In all the actions described above, your lower back is actively working to maintain posture in all those positions. Do this little activity to give you an idea of what your back is doing all the time to support your body.

Take your hand and make a fist. Squeeze that fist as hard as you can for one minute, no less, more if you can. Now relax. How do your hand and forearm feel? Pretty tired, huh, maybe stiff. What you just did is exactly what your lower back does all the time. It is constantly contracting to hold your body upright. After time it gets tired and the result is a sore, stiff, and tight lower back. Continue Reading »
